OOZING WOUND, NECROGOSTO Are Among The Top Tracks of the Week

Every Thursday, Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.

Culled from the week’s past shows, these tracks have the Gimme Radio DJs’ seal of approval, have the listeners demanding more and the Gimme office buzzing.

NECROGOSTO – Ritual of Decay

Infernal, stumbling trash-fi from São Paulo makes its reappearance a few years after an unfindable Polish release on a Nuclear War Now cassette. Raw and uncompromising, spiritually-defeated growlings clawing its way out of a rhythmic quagmire of black fuzz insanity, bass rumbling like a loose muffler. What’s not to like.

THEORIES – Human Vessel Cell

With a brick to the head of low-end pummel augmented by high end chattering guitars, and an off-kilter drum sound that clocks you relentlessly, this Seattle combo pulls members from Black Breath, Samothrace, and a few others. The multiple layers of what’s going on here stack up to something pure and collectively punishing.

OOZING WOUND – Tween Shitbag

The Chicago thrash trio hate poseurs, I seem to recall them literally killing some in a video a couple years ago, but yeah, a good theme never needs to go away. It’s a happy kinda nihilism though, Oozing Wound are revelling in their riffology, even adding some flutes and horns on the new High Anxiety LP (out on Thrill Jockey this week). It’s one of the heavier Albini productions I’ve heard (In Utero sounded like a flat pancake compared to this, anyway), great band.

A most admirable reissue undertaking thanks to Southern Lord, something off on a side road most metalheads should explore once in a while. Son of a veritable German free jazz saxophone titan, Caspar’s 1989 LP of which this is the title track is more or less ‘free metal’ in form – Hendrix/Blackmore wild axe juju with a touch of Sonny Sharrock in an Einstürzende Neubauten practice chamber. Electric, soulful, and atmospheric.

MASTIFF – Vermin

An adequate handle, a dog that can crush your bones, most fitting for this Hull, UK outfit. Grizzly vocals punctuate thick stop/start basslines and ugly guitars that hover menacingly like bees. Sludgy and miserable as the industrial North itself.
