Ellen DeGeneres had a big surprise for nine-year-old Japanese drum prodigy Yoyoka Soma on her
daytime talk show Tuesday (14th) involving one of the kid’s favorite artists.

During Soma’s visit to the show, DeGeneres asked her who her favorite drummers were. Through her
interpreter (Soma does not speak English), she replied with Foo Fighters frontman/Nirvana drummer
Dave Grohl, citing his “heavy groove” behind the drum kit. You can see the foreshadowing here…

Following Soma’s performance of “The Pretender,” DeGeneres surprises the young drummer with a
video message from none other than Grohl himself. Telling Soma that he had seen her rendition of “The
Pretender” on YouTube, Grohl encourages her, saying that she’s “amazing” and to “keep it up because
the world needs more drummers.”

This was Soma’s second time on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She first caught the attention of the
program in 2018 following a video of the self-taught drummer playing Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad
Times” going viral. In her first appearance, she played a cover of Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy.”

Grohl has been very supportive of young musicians. Last year, he released a documentary called Play,
in which he wrote and recorded a solo track of the same name while interviewing children about
learning to play an instrument for the first time.

Foo Fighters released their latest album, Concrete And Gold, in 2017 and have been touring behind it
ever since. The band will be spending the summer and fall on the road as well with appearances at Sonic
Temple in Ohio, Southside Festival and Hurricane Festival in Denmark, Lollapalooza Stockholm, Reading
Festival and Leeds Festival in the UK and Rock in Rio in Brazil, among other festival and stadium shows.
